FEB-2014
CONTRACT SIGNING: In Hinduism its said that whenever one is to start a new chapter in ones life, from moving to a new home, starting a new business, getting married etc that one should always seek the blessing of the elephant headed god, the remover of obstacles & god of success – lord Ganeshji. Only after visiting my local temple in Flushing Queens I signed the legal contracts and was officially ready to start. Honestly was I nervous? – YES! But I was nervous when I started my first job in banking, when I started my property business, when I left London and moved to New York, this was just another chapter in my life and yes I was freaked out but ready for the exciting journey - well that is what I convinced myself off! I once read a quote - "the real loser is not the one who comes last in a race, its the who is afraid to run it" - I was determined to run this "race" so lets see how I got on.

MARCH-2014
EGG DONOR: March was a very busy and stressful month for me. February I had signed all the legalities and March was about picking an egg donor. I knew exactly what I wanted in a donor. I wanted someone of an Indian heritage, British or American born, someone young like 21-25 years old and of course she had to be hot! My search in early March was very disheartening, I guess trying to find a donor of Indian heritage who was British or American born was a lot harder than I had been prepared for. I was working with my agency and doing my own research talking to over six agencies throughout the UK and USA but not getting any profiles close to what I was looking for and nor were my panel of judges happy with any profiles we received. I was lucky that i did not have to choose a donor alone; I had my best friend Niresh from London and Kristeen from New York vitoing profiles which was a tremendous sanity help. By the middle of March I had basically given up that I was going to find anyone I liked. During the light days of Holi (the days color/colour comes into ones life) I received a profile of a girl from Florida (for which for legal reasons I can not say her name) for which I shall call her "Ms. Florida" and the more I read the more I liked, I mean she was perfect. "Ms Florida" was not exactly Hindu (but of Indian heritage) which was my preference but from my friend Kristeen's long and extensive research we found she was very close to what I wanted so I started to email her and the more I read the more I liked, she was so positive about life, very well educated, well spoken, lovely smile, loves wine, warm hearted, young and beautiful - what more could one ask for in an egg donor? My panel of judges accepted and by the end of March I had selected her to be my egg donor for which she gladly accepted.
SURROGATE: March was also about finding a surrogacy. My surrogate criteria was different from my donor criteria - note the surrogate is the carrier so no genetic connection so I was a little more open to surrogates. My biggest criteria was someone who I could get on with for nine months of pregnancy, someone who had a positive personality, someone very fertile, someone who had carried before and most importantly someone I could trust. After commercial surrogacy had been banned in India for selective parties and I was now doing this in the USA I wanted a surrogate who was as close to New York as possible as I did not want to have to travel/fly somewhere in America to pick up my upcoming daughter. My agency found me a surrogate in upstate New York which was perfect. As "Ms. S" (Ms. Surrogate) was local it was easy to arrange a meet. We met at a rooftop bar in Manhattan with the agency present where we had a wonderful time, she was so nice, has four kids of her own, so bubbly, made me feel relaxed as I was very nervous. We talked over some conditions I had for which I was concerned that she thought I was mad, finished a few glasses of pino and built a friendly yet professional relationship. All in all March was a very productive month, I was happy, things were moving forward, I had found an egg donor who was above and beyond what I had wanted and a surrogate who had a positive & welcoming personality.

April-2014
The month of April I could finally relax. I thought I would use this time productively and spend this time talking to HR at work, my medical insurance and my accountant to see what money and benefits I would get out of them. I started by informing HR at work and my medical Insurance company. I was so pleasantly surprised as to how adaptable both parties were over my non-standard situation. I was offered time off work, ongoing support, my firm had an “assistance program” which helped me pay for expenses associated with my journey and I was set to receive a stipend of cash from work after birth which was a bonus. Through my insurance and accountant I discovered I maybe able to offset some of the surrogacy costs on my taxes – all in all once again a very productive month. I also spent the weekend with some friends who had a baby boy which was an experience, I realized I had a lot to learn about babies over the next many months which was another thing to add to my long list!

MAY/JUNE-2014
DONATION, RETRIVAL & IVF: The donation, retrieval and IVF were all to be done in California. I decided to take my friend with me and turn it into a bit of a holiday. I had been to Los Angeles before when I first looked into the process of surrogacy in 2009 so was familiar with the surroundings. I had been emailing my egg donor who was also going to be in LA at the same time so we decided to meet for coffee (a glass of pino would have been great but no alcohol for her till retrieval!). Note its extremely non-standard for an intended parent and egg donor to meet, most agencies do not even reveal the name of the egg donor to the intended parent/s and vice-versa but it really comes down to the individuals to find common ground. Anyhow I had the most amazing donor who seemed happy to meet so we did. I have to admit I was very nervous, I wanted to make sure I looked good so I got my haircut and looked extremely dashing even if I do say so myself. The donor was lovely, so relaxed, so down to earth, liberal, really nice smile, she was so good looking (most donors usually are) and easy to talk too. I got her (and my surrogate) a nice necklace from Tiffany’s to say a big thanks for which she was extremely grateful. My donor had been a donor before but had not met the couple in that example but seemed very happy we had met. The more I researched donors I was shocked as to how many girls did this, it was not widely spoken about in the UK but a lot more open in USA. By now it did get me thinking as to what my friends & family in London would say about this but for now that was not on the top of my mind as I had many months to think about that. At present I was just happy as to how smoothly this was all going, I had read/heard horror stories about peoples journeys and how it had taken people two years to get to the point I was at in only six months from signing the contracts, I don’t know if it was luck or fate but something or someone was on my side so I kept remaining positive and continued to enjoy each piece of the jigsaw as it came to me.
For the day of my "donation" all I could remember was the episode of “Coupling” where Steve (Jack Davenport) had to do his “donation” - note the room they gave me was nowhere near as glamorous as how it looked like on TV! Donation and egg retrieval went well and I was once again “skint” – I mean the amount of money that was going out of my bank account was insane, I am sure the bank was wondering what I was doing but it was all worth it. I decided to relax for the last couple of days in LA, my friend and I went for some nice dinners, visited the local temple, went strawberry picking and decided to enjoy my last year of freedom so we hit the nightlife in West Hollywood which I discovered beats the nightlife in New York hands down.
CONFIRMATION OF PREGNANCY: I was told from the start not to get my hopes up for a first time pregnancy especially that I only wanted to implant one egg at a time as I wanted to mitigate risk of multiple births. I had mentally been prepered to do three to four cycles of IVF. To my pleasant surprise I received confirmation of pregnancy on 24-June-2014, I was four week and two days! It was a miracle in my eyes that all this happened first time, I was so happy, I could not believe it all happened so fast!! I could not get over how much luck was on my side, everything was going so smoothly, the most stressful aspect to-date was deciding which bars to hang out at in LA as it had only been a short trip. I was once told that to gain something in life there are times when one should learn to give something up. I actually had not sacrificed much in this journey to date so I said to myself to pick the worse habit I have and to give it up till "baby Anjali" was twelve weeks old. I decided to give up alcohol for the next eight weeks so I could pray for a healthy first trimester. I was so happy, I was four week "in" but a little sad I could not really tell anyone as I could not deal with any questions right now so just told my three close friends and continued to write my website which surprising was very therapeutic
.
Pronunciation of Anjali is Un-jah-lee, not ONjahlee or ANjahlee

By September/October I was at almost 20 weeks so started to feel comfortable in telling people. I booked a weeks flight to London and started with my parents. I come from a traditional background so as one can imagine it was not the happiest of news at first. As the week progressed it was obvious that they were having trouble hiding their excitement which for me was enough for now. I also starting working through my close friends one by one for which I had no idea how people would react. The general consensus was that people were shocked but even more so people just seemed fascinated by the process. I felt I had repeated myself ten times on that trip and by the time I left London to come back to New York I was mentally drained! Surprisingly enough telling my friends in New York was much easier, everyone seemed to know about the process or knew of someone who has a reasonably similar story. Sep/Oct was a rewarding month for me, I felt a big weight had been lifted off my shoulders as people now knew and I was actually getting inundated with baby information, tips & suggestions from people which started off as educational but I could not mentally understand how my single parent friends had much more positive, stressless informaton to provide than some of my married couple friends. I read the daily quote on Bloomberg that morning which said "someone who is mentally prepared for a journey is already halfway there" - I was hoping that Bloomberg was somehow talking about single parents having babies alone via surrogacy!

Godh Bharai for my wonderful surrogate and Ganeshji pooja in preparation of Anjali arrival
The Godh Bharai / Baby Shower / Ganeshji pooja went very well. I was very nervous as to what to expect but the ceremony ran smoothly and I believe not only did people enjoy the event but everyone also learnt something new. My surrogate mentioned that when we did aarti that Anjali started kicking so I hope she also enjoyed all the songs, the rituals and the pretty colors which all made the day one to remember. A big thanks to my friends and family who came to New York from London and Toronto and most importantly to my surrogate for attending and participating in all the religious rituals

In Hinduism we have a ritual called a “Chhathi Ceremony”. I asked around on the background for why Hindus do this and was told that there was a belief that on the 6th day of the Anjali birth that the god of destiny (Vidhaata) would quietly come into our house around midnight and write the destiny of Anjali with a red pen. It is a pretty simple ceremony which requires a green dress for Anjali, a notebook, a red pen, small god statue/murti, mug and rice.

Today my gorgeous Anjali turned one month old, I really cannot believe where the month went – it seriously is still a blurb to me. The last month has been the most challenging yet inspirational month I have ever witnessed. I have had days where I have wanted to pull my hair out and others where Anjali and I have enjoyed lovely days together - walks to macy, lunch at the boathouse restaurant in central park and long walks to union square. I must say it has been fun, I cannot believe how much she has also grown and changed since birth and how much I have also learnt about myself. Today was also a special day as Anjali also got her American passport (if you knew how much hard work that was you would know why i was so happy)! We now just need to get her British one – ohh what a lucky girl, two passports and she has only just been born!

Anjali's First Birthday
23-Feb-2016
Today my little baby turns one, what a year?! Sleepless night, ruined furniture, not knowing what day it is half the time and wondering what I was doing with my life! I would not have changed anything, it is all worth it when i see her smile, when she falls asleep on my and when i remember how blessed i am to have a daughter. Happy birthday to my darling, may the new year bring you all you wish for and much more.
